Lesson 2: Site Analysis and Measurements
Date: August 14, 2025
Session Time: 8:00am-12:00pm EST
Duration: 4 hours (including 15-minute exercise)
Key Learning Objective
Conducting a systematic site survey and gathering comprehensive requirements through observation and measurement.
Lesson Overview
This session focuses on developing the skills needed to assess a construction site thoroughly, including measurements, condition evaluation, and requirement identification.
Main Activities (3 hours 45 minutes)
- Review of site survey best practices
- Demonstration of proper measurement techniques
- Research of local building codes and regulations
- Discussion of environmental factors and constraints
- Documentation standards and methods
15-Minute Exercise: Mini Site Survey
Exercise Description
Conduct a focused 15-minute survey of a specific section of the deck/dock area, practicing systematic observation and measurement techniques.
Materials Needed
- Measuring tape
- Notebook or digital document
- Camera
- Basic safety equipment (gloves, closed-toe shoes)
Exercise Steps (15 minutes)
- Section Selection (2 minutes)
- Choose one 10' x 10' section of the deck or dock
- Mark the boundaries clearly
-
Note why this section was selected
-
Systematic Measurement (5 minutes)
- Measure the exact dimensions of your section
- Measure the height/grade difference if any
- Count and measure any existing structural elements
-
Record all measurements in a clear format
-
Condition Assessment (5 minutes)
- Document the condition of materials (wood, metal, concrete)
- Note any visible damage or wear
- Assess structural integrity (stability, safety)
-
Take 2-3 photos showing key findings
-
Requirement Identification (3 minutes)
- List 3 specific requirements for this section
- Note any code compliance issues
- Identify potential challenges or opportunities
Deliverable
- Section measurements (length, width, height)
- Condition assessment notes
- 2-3 photos with descriptions
- List of 3 requirements
- Any code compliance notes
Success Criteria
- Measurements are accurate and clearly recorded
- Condition assessment is objective and detailed
- Photos clearly show key findings
- Requirements are specific and actionable
- All safety observations are noted
Integration with Overall Project
This exercise develops the systematic approach needed for the full site survey and establishes the foundation for accurate design and planning decisions.
