Lesson 3: CAD Introduction and Concept Sketching

Date: August 21, 2025
Session Time: 8:00am-12:00pm EST
Duration: 4 hours (including 15-minute exercise)

Key Learning Objective

Introduction to CAD tools and translating hand-drawn concepts into digital format through systematic design thinking.

Lesson Overview

This session introduces computer-aided design software and teaches the fundamental skills needed to create both hand-drawn and digital representations of design concepts.

Main Activities (3 hours 45 minutes)

  • Introduction to CAD software (TinkerCAD, SketchUp, or similar)
  • Basic CAD interface and tools demonstration
  • Hand-drawing techniques for concept development
  • Design thinking principles and iteration
  • File management and organization best practices

15-Minute Exercise: Concept Translation

Exercise Description

Create a hand-drawn concept sketch and then translate it into a basic CAD model, practicing the transition from analog to digital design.

Materials Needed

  • Graph paper or sketch pad
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Computer with CAD software
  • Simple object for reference (e.g., a small box or book)

Exercise Steps (15 minutes)

  1. Hand Sketch (5 minutes)
  2. Choose a simple object (box, book, or similar)
  3. Draw it from 3 different angles (top, front, side)
  4. Use basic geometric shapes and clear lines
  5. Add basic dimensions to your sketch

  6. CAD Translation (8 minutes)

  7. Open your CAD software
  8. Create the same object using basic shapes (cubes, rectangles)
  9. Match the approximate dimensions from your sketch
  10. Use at least 3 different views (top, front, side)

  11. Comparison and Reflection (2 minutes)

  12. Compare your hand sketch to your CAD model
  13. Note what was easier/harder in each medium
  14. Identify one thing you'd do differently next time

Deliverable

  • Hand-drawn sketch with 3 views and dimensions
  • Basic CAD model of the same object
  • Brief comparison notes (2-3 sentences)

Success Criteria

  • Hand sketch shows clear 3-view representation
  • CAD model matches the sketch reasonably well
  • Dimensions are consistent between sketch and CAD
  • Comparison notes show thoughtful reflection

Integration with Overall Project

This exercise builds the foundational skills needed to create both conceptual sketches and detailed CAD models for the deck and dock design, establishing the design workflow for the entire project.
