Lesson 5: Materials Research and Selection
Date: September 4, 2025
Session Time: 8:00am-12:00pm EST
Duration: 4 hours (including 15-minute exercise)
Key Learning Objective
Researching and selecting appropriate materials through systematic comparison of properties, costs, and suitability for specific applications.
Lesson Overview
This session teaches how to research construction materials, compare options, and make informed decisions based on project requirements, budget, and environmental factors.
Main Activities (3 hours 45 minutes)
- Introduction to common deck and dock materials
- Research methods and reliable sources
- Material property analysis (strength, durability, cost)
- Environmental considerations and sustainability
- Decision-making frameworks for material selection
15-Minute Exercise: Material Comparison Matrix
Exercise Description
Research three different decking materials and create a comparison matrix to evaluate their suitability for the project, practicing systematic decision-making.
Materials Needed
- Computer with internet access
- Spreadsheet software or paper grid
- Calculator
- Notebook for research notes
Exercise Steps (15 minutes)
- Material Selection (2 minutes)
- Choose 3 decking materials (e.g., pressure-treated wood, composite, PVC)
- Note why you selected these specific materials
-
Identify your primary selection criteria
-
Research and Data Collection (8 minutes)
- Research each material for: cost per square foot, lifespan, maintenance requirements
- Find 2-3 reliable sources for each material
- Record key data points in your matrix
-
Note any special considerations (environmental, safety, etc.)
-
Matrix Creation (3 minutes)
- Create a comparison table with your findings
- Rate each material (1-5 scale) on: cost, durability, maintenance, sustainability
-
Calculate a simple weighted score if time permits
-
Recommendation (2 minutes)
- Based on your matrix, recommend one material
- Explain your reasoning in 2-3 sentences
- Note any assumptions or limitations
Deliverable
- Material comparison matrix with data
- Research notes with sources
- Material recommendation with reasoning
- List of any assumptions made
Success Criteria
- Matrix includes relevant data from reliable sources
- Comparison is objective and systematic
- Recommendation is supported by the data
- Sources are documented for verification
Integration with Overall Project
This exercise develops the research and decision-making skills needed for the full project materials selection and establishes a framework for making informed choices throughout the construction process.
